From Cake Vendor to TV Star: Elizabeth Serunye’s Remarkable Journey on Skeem Saam

In the vibrant world of South African youth drama series, few shows have left as lasting an impact as “Skeem Saam.” At the heart of this beloved and enduring series is the talented actress, Elizabeth Serunye, who has portrayed the iconic character of Jacobeth Thobakgale for over a decade. However, what many fans may not know is that before gracing the small screen, Serunye led a remarkable life as a cake vendor.

A Slice of Life: From Cakes to Stardom

Elizabeth Serunye’s journey to fame and recognition is a testament to her unwavering determination and passion for the performing arts. Born and raised in Alexandra, a township north of Johannesburg, Serunye embarked on her acting journey in 1986. During that era, pursuing acting as a career was not a common choice in black communities. Nevertheless, her passion for the art form propelled her forward, and she remained steadfast in her pursuit of her dreams.

Trials and Triumphs

Serunye’s path to success was not without its challenges. She faced setbacks in her career, losing out on some acting opportunities. Faced with the need to support herself, she turned to the retail industry to make ends meet. However, her indomitable spirit refused to be deterred.

In 2001, while juggling various jobs to sustain herself, Serunye took a bold step by starting a street vending business. Every morning, from 5.30 am to 8.30 am, she could be found at her street corner, selling delectable cakes for just R5. Her target audience included those heading to work, school, or in search of employment.

The Rise to Stardom

Serunye’s hard work and determination paid off. In 2001, the same year she ventured into street vending, she secured a role on the popular show “Generations.” Her talent shone through, and she continued to make waves in the industry.

In 2011, she joined the cast of “Skeem Saam” as the stern and dedicated principal, a role that resonated with her own drive to reach for the stars. On the show, her character, Jacobeth Thobakgale, faced formidable challenges, mirroring Serunye’s own journey. The intense rivalry between Jacobeth and her longtime nemesis, Alfred Magongwa, portrayed by Putla Sehlapelo, captivated millions of viewers as they battled for power and control of Turf High School.

Lessons from Miss Thobakgale

Elizabeth Serunye, known affectionately as “Batista” by her pupils, has not only excelled in her role on “Skeem Saam” but has also contributed to the portrayal of strong, determined women on television. Her character’s resilience in the face of adversity reflects the real-life challenges Serunye herself overcame to achieve her dreams.

As she reflects on her journey, Serunye’s message is clear: “I have tried so many things in my life, from selling cakes on a street corner to working in retail.” Her story serves as an inspiration to all, reminding us that with passion, perseverance, and a belief in oneself, even the loftiest dreams can be realized.

In the ever-evolving storyline of “Skeem Saam,” Magongwa seeks to oust Miss Thobakgale from her principalship. Yet, as Serunye asserts, sometimes one must fight for what they believe in, just as she did in her own life. The unfolding narrative promises to keep viewers on the edge of their seats as they witness the determination of a woman who has already overcome so much.
